NAMAZU Namazu figurines are objects from Japanese mythology that represent a large catfish called "namazu" which, according to legend, lives in the mud under the earth and causes earthquakes when it moves. These figurines have traditionally been used as talismans to protect against earthquakes. During the Edo period in Japan, when earthquakes were frequent, there was a widespread belief that a god called Kashima kept namazu under control with a huge stone or hairpin. Namazu figurines were then produced and worn as symbols of protection against earthquakes.
